Celebrations!

Welcome back everyone!

We hope that you had a lovely, relaxing half term and that you are refreshed, ready for this jam-packed term!

Over the course of this term, we will be learning more about some well known celebrations such as Bonfire Night, Remembrance, Advent and Christmas.

Week 1 - Bonfire Night

What an exciting week! We learnt about firework safety through the story of Welephant and learnt about the history of Guy Fawkes and how he tried to blow up King James in the Houses of Parliament. In maths we were learning all about repeating patterns and had lots of opportunities to show this in our own learning and our art work. We watched some firework displays to stimulate our creative writing and to help us become different sorts of fireworks in our PE lessons - we were amazing!frown

Week 2 - Remembrance

This week we are thinking about being thankful and how we remember and honour people who have fought or died in wars to keep our country safe. We will watch a very thoughtful film on CBeebies to help us have a simple understanding of why people wear poppies. We will write thank you prayers and make poppy collages to create a class wreath. In maths we will be learning about money and will make our own poppy shop to learn about spending money.

Week 3 - Seasons

This week we have been learning about the seasons. We know that the seasons repeat in a life cycle and we have talked about how each season is different and also which one we like the best. To support our understanding we have made some very special season's calendars ready for Christmas. In maths we have been learning about the concept of 'more' and also about adding to 5 using lots of different equipment. We have also started learning our Christmas songs ready for our Christmas get together on 14th December. In phonics we have now learnt all of our initial sounds and will be using the rest of this term to practice our letter formation, blending and segmenting and tricky words.

Week 4 - Hanukkah

What a brilliant week! We have had so much fun learning about Hanukkah. We have read lots of stories and watched films about families celebrating this lovely festival of light. We have been comparing Hanukkah to celebrations that we might have in our homes such as birthdays and Christmas. We have played a dreidel game, made menorahs, tasted some Hannukah food and written a class information book about what we have learnt. In maths we have been learning about the concept of 'fewer' and also taking away. Our science investigations have been focused on light and shadow and we have had brilliant fun exploring the torches ad shadow puppets.

Week 5 - Advent

This week we are learning about advent. Reverend mark told us about the advent wreath in worship and how Christians celebrate the time leading up to Christmas. We have been learning from each other and talking about how we get ready for Christmas in our own families. An elf has visited each classroom to keep an eye o the children for santa and he is getting up to all sorts of mischief and fun! In other countries there are other traditions that we have been learning all about too! We have been getting ready for our Christmas performance, practising our wonderful songs - you are in for a treat!

Week 7 - Christmas

Our last full week of term and  lots still to do. We are still learning about the CHristmas story and we will be sequencing the story in literacy. In maths we are comparing size, length and height in lots of Christmassy ways! Our performance takes place on Thursday so we are squeezing in some last minute practise. We have a treat on Wednesday with a walk to the church to see Reverend Mark.He is going to show us around and tell us the Christmas story. We are also designing and  making our own sleighs for Santa, trying to improve the design to make it easier for him to deliver all the presents.

Week 6 - Christmas

Our classrooms are decorated and we are preparing for the Christmas fair. As part of our enterprise project we have made Christmas decorations to sell along with our clay poppies that we made earlier this term. We had to buy the parts for our decorations in our maths learning. We learnt about what a Christmas fair is and how we could make our stall attractive so that people would want to buy our wares! We had our Christingle service with Reverend Mark and have been working really hard on all of our assessments with our teachers at the same time, phew!
