Numeracy

Term 5 = This term we spent a lot of time adding and subtracting using objects, number lines and also our fingers and brains.  As well we counted out objects into piles of 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 to help us count quicker. We used real Smarties as the objects and had to divide them into groups of 3 or 4 etc. The best part was eating them afterwards - yum yum!! In addition we looked at doubling and halving using objects.  At the end of the term we were so clever we were able to add pairs of 2 digit numbers together such as 26 + 23 because we know all about tens and units and how it is easier to add the tens first.  

As part of our Enterprise topic and linked to our D.T. topic, we had to decide on which pizza toppings we would like to put on our own pizzas. However, the children had a budget and had to work out using coins if they could afford to buy everything they wanted.  Some children had to change their minds when they realised they couldn't afford all the things they wanted and work out the new cost.

Terms 3 and 4 = 2, 4, 6 ... We have been practising counting again and can count in steps of 1, 2, 5 and 10.  We have also been developing our addition and subtraction skills using a range of resources, including a huge number line.  The children really enjoyed the practical activities when we looked at measuring the weight and capacity of various objects and containers.  We could predict if something would be heavier or lighter and tried to predict and estimate the capacity of containers. Please could you help reinforce o'clock and half past times with your child as well as the days of the week and months of the year.

Term 2 = This term we have continued to improve our counting and can also put missing numbers on a number track.  We have learnt the days of the week, months of the year and also discussed what is special about each season.  We have begun to learn to tell the time and can make o'clock times.

Term 1 = We try to make the lessons fun and practical using a range of equipment.  So far this term we have done lots of counting, measuring and sorting.  We have just started to write addition and subtraction number sentences.
