Superheroes

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No...it's Superman!

Superheroes
Term One

Our Curriculum Booklet for this topic is available to look at, please click on the link below. It gives information about the lessons and subjects that the children will be learning about and how they have been linked to our topic. It also tells you the skills that the children will be developing. We hope it is useful.

We hope our parents enjoyed looking around the classroom earlier on this term. The children were so eager to show them round! Resource packs were available, we hope they become useful, particularly during homework activities. If we can help in any other way, please talk to a member of the year one team.

We have loved our Superhero topic! Please read below to find out what we have been up to in term one. There are also photographs and examples of work to view below.

In English, we have been learning how to write labels and captions.
At the beginning of the term, we looked very carefully at Superman and Batman and labelled their costumes. We enjoyed learning about the gadgets and super powers!
In week 6, we were provided with a letter labelled ‘Top Secret’. We were told that Mr Incredible had carried out a secret mission and had to work in teams of two to decide what the mission was about. We sequenced the pictures and ‘talk wrote’ a caption for each picture. The next day, we became reporters! We wrote sentences to describe the secret mission, some of us wrote our sentences on newspaper templates. Libby-Mae and Emily were very proud to show their work to Mrs Bellaby!
On the 19th October, a mystery occurred in the classroom! The children walked in to find police tape around the room. We looked for clues all day but it wasn’t until after lunch that all was revealed….we had received a video from a real Police Sergeant! He informed us that Super Villains had escaped from jail and that the Police Force needed our help to find them! We were provided with evidence packs which included pictures of the Joker, Penguin and the Riddler. We used adjectives to label the villains with as much information as we could to describe what the villains looked like and were like as people. Then, we used the information to write sentences for a ‘Wanted’ poster- it was so much fun!

To develop our Geography skills, we read ‘Charlie’s Superhero Underpants’. We helped Charlie to find his favourite underpants by labelling a map of the UK with its country names and capital cities. Then, we used ‘Google Earth’ to see if we could spot them in the cities.

Our topic ‘Incredbible Me’ has helped us to describe why we are so incredible. We have written facts about ourselves including our age, date of birth, favourite food and favourite hobby. We wrote these on our beautifully presented Superhero emblem. They looked beautiful when displayed in our classroom. For the first time this year, we used timelines to show how we have changed since the day we were born. We giggled at our baby pictures and used our memories to explain what was happening in the photographs.
