Striving to be the best we can!
Welcome to the Year 5 class page!
Dear children and parents,
The Year 5 team are really excited to be working with you this term! We have lots of great activities planned and we are looking forward to exploring our topic – ‘Friend or Foe - part 2'!
During the term we will be learning about the Cold War. We will focus on the basic ideology of communism and capitalism and look at how the Berlin Wall affected life in Germany. We will also learn about the Space Race, and how spies were used for espionage between Russia and America. Propoganda was also a large part of the Cold War so we will also be exploring posters and propaganda cartoons from the time.
Parents, watch this space to see how we are getting on!

Useful Information for parents
This term, we will send out a letter detailing the whole term's homework. We ask that you support your child to return homework by the due dates specified in the letter. Homework will consist of Maths and English tasks relating to learning in class. Every other week, we will set Times Tables Rockstars tasks. Don't worry if you don't have access to this at home because there will be opportunity for your child to complete this at school if necessary.
You can find a copy of the homework letter in the 'Documents' section below.
In addition to formal homework, we ask that you continue to listen to your child read on a regular basis and that you discuss what they have read with them. This will help enormously when they come to quizzing at school.
Spellings will also be sent home and your child is encouraged to learn these over the week ready for a test on Wednesdays. These spellings are taken from the focus of lessons the previous week.
We would also like your child to continue learning their times tables. A letter will be sent home explaining the process and can be found below for your reference.
This term both classes will be doing PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Miss Cooper's class is swimming this term and next term (terms 2 and 3). These lessons take place on a Tuesday afternoon-don't forget swimming kits!
Trainers rather than plimsolls are advisable as we will be on the school field whenever possible and this can get muddy (even in the summer!)
It may be worthwhile leaving the kit at school at all times. We will make sure that it comes home at the end of term for washing or sooner if it gets particularly muddy!
