Term One - Incredible Me

Term One


Is it a bird? Is it a plane?'s Superman!

This term, in addition to settling into our new classroom and getting to know each other, we will become Superheroes! We have some super activities planned to develop our curriculum skills including labelling superheroes, painting portraits, carrying out Superhero missions and role playing in the Batcave and Headquarters- how exciting! Also, the children asked for a dress-up day so please look out for upcoming letters regarding this.



Week One 

Our first week at school! It was lovely to hear the children share their Summer holiday experiences. We all had a great week settling into Year One, our new classroom and getting used to our new routines. We have written our Class Charters, made our Class Crosses and discussed how we can move from a 'fixed mindset' to a 'growth mindset'. Instead of saying 'I can't do this', we are going to say 'I can't do this yet'.

In English, we have written about our Summer holidays.

In Maths, we have been consolidating our understanding of numbers to 10 and familarising ourselves with equipment that we will be using in our Maths lessons this year.

We have enjoyed our first PE lessons this week. This term, our focus is on Gymnastics (indoor) and Jumping (outdoor).

Week Two 

Wow! Another busy week in Year One. We have enjoyed our first full week! We started our 'Read, Write Inc' Phonics groups.

In Maths, we have completed our first week on the 'Maths No Problem' scheme. We have continued to revise numbers to 10. We have learnt about number sequences and how we can write numbers to 10 using words.

In English, our focus is on Labels, Lists and Captions. This week, we have labelled pictures of Superheroes and their equipment. We have been trying hard to use our Phonics by using our sounds when writing. Next week, we will be adding adjectives to make our writing even better!

In History, we are learning all about us, our families and how we have grown over the years. Thank you to everyone who has sent in photos. We will photocopy these and send the original photos back to you as soon as possible. This week, we produced a Superhero emblem which includes lots of details all about us! Look out for these on display in our classroom.

Next week, we are very excited to begin our Art and Computing lessons! Watch this space!

Week Three

This week, we have begun an Art project. We have learned how to draw our face, looking carefully in the mirror, thinking about the shapes we could see and where the parts of the face are placed. It was quite a tricky task! Then, later in the week, we used oil pastels to add colour to our faces.

In English this week, we have been writing labels. We labelled Superman and used adjectives to add more detail.

Week Four

In Maths this week, we have continued to learn about numbers to 10. We are thoroughly enjoying learning as a whole class. We compared numbers using the terms ‘more’ and ‘fewer’ and have completed some greater depth challenges- very tricky!

In English, we have been reading and writing lists. We read a list to collect the things we needed to create a Superhero painting- they look amazing in our classroom! Then, we used the features of lists to write what a superhero needs using the book, ‘How to be a Superhero’.

Thank you so much for the children’s photographs showing ow they have changed through the years. They loved adding these to a timeline and sharing them with their friends.

Week Five

This week, the iPad have been out for us to use in our geography lessons. There was a photograph to zoom in on to find out where ‘Charlie’s Superhero Underpants’ had been scattered. The children are trying really hard to remember the countries in the UK and their capital cities.

In Science this week, wee have begun to learn about the parts of the human body and what they are used for. We have used labels and next week, we will use this knowledge to explore the senses.

Week Six

Our Science learning has continued this week and we have been using our senses to complete some Superhero missions. We had to use touch to rescue people from an avalanche (rice!), used taste to decide the flavour of skittles, used our sense of sight to spot super villains that were dotted around the playground, our hearing sense to listen to which animals had escaped from a farm and finally, our sense of smell to get rid of horrible smells from the classroom- what a busy afternoon! Mrs West took lots of photographs and using these, the children wrote some brilliant captions about their experiences.

In Maths, we have started our chapter based on Addition. We are continuing to learn our number bonds to 10 and practising telling addition stories based on numbers and pictures.

We hope that you loved the children’s school photographs- they were so well behaved when they were having them done.

Week Seven

Our final week of the term and we are very ready for the break! Keep going children, nearly there!

We carried on our Picasso learning this week by creating Picasso Art using the computer. These looked fantastic and we will be displaying them somewhere for the school to see.

On Thursday, it was our Superhero day! We competed missions including balancing across skyscrapers, ‘pin the emblem on the hero’, spider races and moving ‘kryptonite’ (jelly) using chopsticks. We had such a fun morning and the children behaved brilliantly- we are such lucky teachers! In the afternoon, we had some Superhero races which were lots of fun. Thank you so much for the wonderful costumes- the children look amazing!
