This Year's Topics
Terms 1 and 2 – Friend or Foe?
Term 3 and 4 – Extreme Expeditions
Terms 5 and 6- Invasion!
Term 1 – ‘Friend or Foe?’
This term we will be learning about WW2, with special reference to the Battle of Britain and it being a pivotal turning point in the war. We will be using the novel ‘Friend or Foe’ by Michael Morpurgo to support our learning. We will explore the reasons for the outbreak of war, the role of women in the war, propaganda and government campaigns such as ‘Make Do and Mend’. To enrich our learning experiences we will be visiting Metheringham Airfield where we will take part in a variety of workshops.
Useful Information for parents
This term, we will send out a letter detailing the whole term's homework. We ask that you support your child to return homework by the due dates specified in the letter. Homework will consist of Maths and English tasks relating to learning in class. Every other week, we will set Times Tables Rockstars tasks. Don't worry if you don't have access to this at home because there will be opportunity for your child to complete this at school if necessary.
You can find a copy of the homework letter in the 'Documents' section below.
In addition to formal homework, we ask that you continue to listen to your child read on a regular basis and that you discuss what they have read with them. This will help enormously when they come to quizzing at school.
Spellings in the form of ‘Fridge Words’ will also be sent home and your child is encouraged to learn these over the week. These spellings are taken from the Year 5-6 word lists which are relevant to the focus of lessons that week.
We would also like your child to continue learning their times tables. A letter will be sent home explaining the process and can be found below for your reference.
This term 5A will be swimming on Tuesday afternoons.
5b will be doing dance.
Both classes will be doing outdoor PE on Friday afternoons.
Trainers rather than plimsolls are advisable as we will be on the school field whenever possible and this can get muddy (even in the summer!)
It may be worthwhile to leave the kit at school at all times. We will make sure that it comes home at the end of term for washing or sooner if it gets particularly muddy!
